What To Store And What Not To Store In A Self Storage Unit?
61Self storage is the most convenient option for storing all that extra stuff in from your home or office. In fact, you can use storage units like a second garage. If you are planning to rent a self storage unit then you would need to be well aware of the various restrictions on what is allowed to be stored in the storage unit. In the following paragraphs, you will read all about the different types of materials that can be stored and even those that cannot be stored.
Preparing For Renting The Storage Unit
The first task of the renter is to prepare a preliminary inventory of the list of items that need storage. It would be best if you can talk it out and discuss with the storage facility manager to ensure that you are in compliance with the rules and regulations. Once you have determined your storage requirements you would have to also disclose all of what you will be storing with the store manager. Call the self storage facility beforehand if you are not sure of any prohibited items. This would prevent any unnecessary inconvenience after the boxes are packed and stacked.
Here is a list of articles that are generally not considered acceptable for storage:
*Combustible and Hazardous materials: gasoline, kerosene, compressed gas (oxygen tanks), corrosives, paint, cleaners, lamp and motor oil, propane tanks, chemicals and narcotics are considered ‘inherently dangerous.’ None of these articles are allowed to be stored at the storage facility. Asbestos and articles containing asbestos, toxic and biological waste, fireworks, weapons, explosives and ammunition are not allowed.
* Vehicles: Almost all kinds of vehicles like cars, RVs, trucks, boats and even aircrafts are acceptable at the storage unit, provided they are insured and registered according to the local laws. They should also be in operational condition when stored.
* Construction equipment: Most construction equipment is allowed at the storage facilities. In fact, for most construction companies it is a convenient option to store the equipment at the facility and pick it up from there whenever needed. Some equipment like those that are used to track underground water is not allowed in storage. Check with the facility and go through the list of prohibited equipment list before you sign any contracts with the facility.
* Medical equipment and supplies: All kinds of medical equipment and supplies are allowed storage. In fact, storing in a storage container helps organize the products much more neatly. It is also a useful way of getting easy access to the stored articles without cluttering the office space. While most medical equipment is allowed in storage, anything that contains radioactive materials or radioactive equipment cannot be stored by law.
* Perishable food: Canned food is allowed in storage as long as it is sealed properly. Foods items like cereal, meats etc. are not allowed as they can spoil and attract rats and other rodents.
* Miscellaneous use: Dead or living plants and animals cannot be stored. Renters are not allowed to live in the units, nor are they allowed to plug in refrigerators, heaters or generators inside the unit.
Consider all these restrictions before you pack for the storage facility. Once at the storage facility you would be required to sign a lease indicating that you agree to all the terms and conditions put up by the storage facility. All further responsibility of the stored articles lies with the renter and not with the storage facility.
